Homecoming

Ben wasn't sure what to do with the house. Growing up the place had never really felt like home and now that his parents had passed away any reason he'd had to return was gone. Even thinking about the family farm made his stomach turn queasy and the work and time it would take to fix it up enough to sell seemed more than he could bear. But not everyone shared Ben's pessimism about the place. For some it was special; a place of great power and reverence. It had seen so many things come and go. Had borne witness to the birth of civilizations from savage wilderness, watched as empires rose from nothing and crumbled back into dust, and spent seasons in slumber for lack of anything interesting enough to rouse its curiosity. As the eons wore on there seemed to be less and less worth waking for. But it did enjoy feeding. That had never changed.
